After hearing about the old Numjai location reopening as Central Thai I was really excited to try it. Finally got to with a group of eight.
I found the experience to be somewhat hit or miss, but overall worth four stars. First, the location isnt exactly the easiest to find. If the Gates is open you can walk straight through to the restaurant, but when we went at 7:30pm the Gates was closed so we ended up wandering around the underground parking area until we finally found a staircase at the back.
Once inside the atmosphere is very nice, bordering on the edge of 'dress-up', at least when we were there. It was a Saturday night so it was very, very busy - almost completely full. Where I think I would fault Central is with their service. Perhaps due to the large amount of tables the service was fairly slow and abrupt. It also took quite some time for our food to come out, again probably due to the large amount of people.
When it came to the food it was all very good. The Tom Yum soup was spot on delicious, though a small bowl of it was six quid. The main entrees (I had duck with basil and phad kee mau) were also very good, though I believe the average diner would see it as a fairly small portion for the price. I believe one was eight quid and the other was twelve. On the plus side they have a large, reasonably-priced wine list from which we had a good bottle of white wine.
Overall I feel that Central Thai is the best Thai food I have had in the Durham area. It looks like they have some promising lunch specials so that is worth checking out, the atmosphere is lovely, Im sure the service will be alright once they work out the kinks, the food is very good.
